vegetable box scheme

calabreseWhy boxes? We've tried most ways of marketing what we grow. All have proven to be unsatisfactory for different reasons. Mostly the problem has been that they have taken far too much time and simply don't allow us to make a living. So we've teamed up with Mike Langley and Jill Jackson from Ty'n Lon Uchaf farm, Llangybi, in an informal cooperative, to produce weekly veg boxes. Like us, Mike and Jill are registered as fully organic by the Soil Association.

We launched our joint box scheme in early November 2002. We normally produce around 10 boxes and up to 30 bags per week so we have around 40 customers, the maximum number we can manage.

What's a box like? We offer two box sizes: a small one (actually a bag) for £11 and a larger one for £16.50. Into these go a good selection of whatever we have growing or stored. Typically a small box will contain eight or more veg varieties whilst the large one will contain more veg and more veg varieties too. In fact, we usually pack your veg in reusable Soil Association bags which we ask you to return please. Everything we sell is produced either at Mur Crusto or Ty'n Lon and is fully organic to Soil Association standards.

If you're picking up a box/bag, you'll find it in the cool, thick-walled Swallows' House - Ty Wennol - just to the left of the blue iron garden gate. And yes, there really are swallows raised in here every summer. The bags are stored on shelves labelled £11 or £16.50 accordingly. You'll see a whiteboard list of what's in the boxes each week so you know what the veg types are. Please tick your name off on the collection list (plus those of others for whom you may be collecting), put the money in the second-hand envelopes provided, note who it's from and place it in the black metal box provided. If you're collecting eggs, please note on the collection list how many you've taken and place your payment in the same envelope. Please collect your veg as soon as possible after it's packed: that's any time after 5pm on Fridays or during the weekend. Then you can be sure it's really fresh. If you are the last person to leave, please please close the main gate at the end of the avenue. Thank you.
