Seasonal vegUnlike big commercial growers who use enormous amounts of energy to heat and light greenhouses for non-seasonal production, we grow normal seasonal vegetables and fruits outside. But our polytunnel permits us to 'extend' the seasons. Its shelter and relative warmth means we can get things started a few weeks earlier and keep them going a few weeks longer. Some salad-type veg we can keep growing all year so that there's always something fresh and green to put in the veg boxes. We grow......staples
like carrots, potatoes, onions and cabbages, as you'd expect. Now the
polytunnel is in full production, we have many other lines. In particular
we have oriental vegetables such as the highly-popular Pak Choi and Mizuna
as well as less well known varieties like Namenia and Komatsuna.
All these can be used in salads, raw, or more commonly in stir-fries.
The polytunnel allows us to extend the growing season so we can produce
early Potatoes, Mangetout Peas and Carrots in spring. Later on, we have
tomatoes (several different varieties), Peppers and Aubergines in production
along with Sweetcorn, Courgettes, Cucumbers and various types of Beans.
